Maxwell ultra/super caps

Recommended Posts

Well I just hopped on this band wagon so to speak I have a single bank (6) 2.7 3000f maxwell caps arriving tomorrow, I have copper bars waiting on their arrival and this post has answered SOME of my questions prior to installing them.

On using the 1% 100ohm resistors do I need to get a specific wattage rating on them or? And since I am going to use the resistors its just on between each + and - pair so I would need 3 resistors correct?

Also I am seeing 5% resistors not able to find 1%.

http://www.amazon.com/E-Projects-Resistors-Watt-100R-Pieces/dp/B00BVCCA90/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459858442&sr=8-1&keywords=100+ohm+1%25+resistor

Does the wattage rating on the resistor matter also?

Thanks!

Edit I found these.

and these.

I would only buy electrical components from a reputable vendor like DigiKey and/or Mouser.

Plus they will easily have 1% resistors and their shipping is pretty decent.

You'll want 1% resistors so they are all as close as possible to each other.

Power is important on any resistor.

Each resistor could have up to 2.7V across it. So 2.7^2/100=73mW max.

So 1/4W resistors (250mW) would be perfectly fine as long as they are kept relatively cool.

I'm dead serious when I ask this, does anyone know of these blowing up in people's cars? I was thinking of putting a bank in my truck but was afraid I'd be a Jihad waiting to happen

I've never heard of any caps blowing up but you do have to be very careful with them to avoid shorting, overheating and whatnot.

I have over a year and a half on my bank of the 3000f maxwells daily driven and get used hard and they are going great.

I haven't had a balancing circuit since the start, however, all my cells were bought new together and i bought them from slamminbeats with low usage and they have always stayed within .02v across all 6 cells.

i run 2 banks daily in my 4runner without balancing and they are doing great. there is no need to have a relay connected to your caps, as long as you still have a battery under the hood, your voltage will not just drop once the car is off, the reserve of the battery keeps the caps maintained and stops them from the just getting drained all the way down. I actually find that with caps in my voltage while the car is off stays above battery float level for a pretty long time, im talking park it at night, come out the next day and see my voltage is still at 13.4v resting. not playing music or anything while off just parked.

I am usually anti-capacitor however my cousin wants a capacitor of some sort in his build. He doesn't want to spend more than $200 and I'm looking at the NVX 10F capacitor to help balance his system a bit. He has a 230A alternator with a Yellow Top battery to run two Soundqubed amps, the q4-90 and the 1200.2. He has the big 3 all with 1/0 gauge wiring. It's not yet installed but he is set on getting a capacitor. Would one of those mini supercapacitor banks be more beneficial than the NVX 10F hybrid capacitor? This is the one I have in mind:

Using the calculations provided, I would have 891 watts available on a 3 sec burst at 80% efficiency. The question is will this be better than the NVX hybrid 10F capacitor? I know nothing about how these hybrid capacitors work or don't work for that matter. The truck it's going into is not going into SPL competitions, just an occasional car show and driven once or twice a week.

Why is he set on getting a cap? He doesn't need one. A 230A alt on that truck and that setup will be more than enough.
