Physics Help (Drift Velocity)

Recommended Posts

I have an upcoming exams and one of the things I am stuck on is how to get the electric field, potential difference (easy once I have E), and power dissipated.

Problem is : Aluminum wire with cross sectional area of 4x10^-6 m^2 carries a current of 5A. Density of aluminum is 2.7g/m^3. Assume each aluminum atom supplies a conduction electron per atom. Find the (a) drift velocity, (b ) current density, (c ) electric field, (d) potential difference, and (e) power dissipated.

I know what (a) and (b ) are which is 1.3x10^-4 m/s and 1.25x10^6 A/m^2 respectively. Just don't know where to go from here to find a force or whatever to get a field/potential difference. And if there is possibly info that i would need to get the unknowns that otherwise wouldnt make it possible let me know.

*this isnt for a grade, just trying to review.

Thanks guys.

I thought drift velocity was the speed at which you would steer a car through the corner with the throttle. You might get more answers if you post this in the Physics section. lol

No really, I'm tuned in. There should be an equation for the magnetic field. It also would seem that you would have to figure out the voltage before you could get the power?

We need Tony D. Is he back yet?

Have you checked with Wolfram Alpha, or Khan Academy?

Yes and about an hour or more of searching online through various sources.

It is for electric field E, not magnetic field B.

Think I might have found it. Was probably missing info from the problem which would be resistivity of the metal, or Rho.

Current Density = E/Rho where Rho is resisitivty, or Current Density = E(sigma) where sigma is conductivity.
