New just for fun box idea, 12 12s

So i couldn't sleep and decided to play around with torres and sketchup and came up with this. It is based around 12 DC XL12s at around 3ft^3 per sub after displacement. Port tuning on torres came out a little funky at 21hz but i don't think that is right due to the baffles actually being the ports. Cool thing about this tho is it would fit behind the 2nd row of a 'Burban without cutting on the roof or fender wells. Just figured i'd throw this out there for everyones input.

Interesting design. Here are a couple of my thoughts:

1. At 3 cu ft per sub, the box is WAY too big for those subs, they probably wouldn't last long on reasonable power.

2. When you have the subs fire into the port like that, funky things happen. Its not going to perform like a conventional ported box. You could model its output with something like HornResp though.

The volume issue worried me as well. I believe if i made the enclosure about 6" narrower it would remedy the size issue, but lower the tuning even further. I'm unfamiliar with Hornresp tho, would it be too much trouble to ask you to model this box? I've hit the limit of my knowledge at this point lol.

I love this I just think the port needs to be bigger , so much pressure is gonna be coming out of that port but I say go for it. Looks great.

Yea i've seen this design done a few times now. I was just curious if i could successfully design one and theoretically make it work. Most of the enclosures i design for myself are made to fit in the back of a 2000 - 2006 suburban without removing the second row of seats. I think it is a lot more impressive to be truly loud and still be able to seat more than 2 people. That was actually the entire reason i bought a Suburban in the first place, to fit a big system and still have seating room.

I agree. Because the port and baffle are one in the same, making the port larger will subsequently lower the internal volume, which is exactly what i need to do anyway.

lol I wish, for 12 XLs and 3 10k amps would be right around $13,000. A guy can dream tho lol.

Sure here ya go. This is the box as you have it right now:

Tuning came out to around 20 hz, like you predicted. That spike in output down low is significantly less than ideal IMHO, and the box is way too big.

Here it is with the net volume reduced to 18 cu ft and the port area increased. This raises the tuning to around 33 Hz and greatly reduces the port velocity, which is a problem you would have run into with your original design. We still have a pretty big spike in the frequency response though.

For comparison purpose, here is a more conventionally laid out port box. Same specs, 18 cu ft at 33 Hz. As you can see it has much smoother frequency response. That big spike is what you tend to get with the subs mounted in the port.
