reedal Posted December 13, 2016 Report Posted December 13, 2016 It's still a matter of testing the difference between having subs that you can wire series/parallel to 1ohm, or parallel/parallel to 1ohm. You seem to have decided that two D1 subs wired series/parallel is automatically better than two D4 subs wired parallel/parallel, when there's no testing to back it up. How do you know which one will cause less impedance rise, being put in the exact same environment? 8ten8 Posted December 14, 2016 Report Posted December 14, 2016 Gotcha. You got me thinking now. Not as cut and dry as I previously thought. I really appreciate you taking time to share your knowledge. That's why I joined the forum, to get a better understanding. Chime in on my bologna anytime.
reedal Posted December 14, 2016 Report Posted December 14, 2016 It's good to think about it. That's what you should do before making any decision. I put a decent amount of thought into it as well, I just don't have the means of testing it. Here's my hypothesis, and I leave it up to someone with the means of testing it to do so: two dual 1ohm subs wired series/parallel = 1ohm, but the voice coils wired in series = 2ohm per a sub, correct? But each voice coil is still only 1ohm. And two dual 4ohm subs wired parallel/parallel = 1ohm, each sub individually would be 2ohm total, but each voice coil is still 4ohm. So my hypothesis is that even though the end result is the same (nominal DCR presented to the amplifier), the two dual 1ohm subwoofers would have less impedance rise than the two dual 4ohm subs, given that the enclosure, environment, operating temperature, amplifier, test tone, etc. is exactly the same. And that is due strictly to the resistance of the voice coils themselves. Just my thoughts. DLHgn Posted December 15, 2016 Report Posted December 15, 2016 The bl is also higher in series. What does the bl represent/contribute to? Can't quiet give you an in depth explanation on why it is important but, as far as I know, BL is essentially the motor force of your driver. "Magnetic Induction crossed with wire length in the airgap. (crossing = cross product, a mathematical vector-operation)"
