02 Lexus LS430 4th order wall build

Recommended Posts

Got the car back and started working on it.. I first took out the amp rack to get most of the wires in the trunk cleaned up. I then wrapped the rack with carpet and put it back in the trunk. Unfortunately I'll have to remove everything from the trunk to do some wiring under the floor and possibly even wrap the floor (haven't decided yet)..

I've also got a question for all you guys.. I'm trying to decide which way to make the port.. either centered vertical, or top horizontal. What's y'alls opinion and y? Thanks..

Cool build! I would put it horizontal top because it looks like the ceiling would act as an extension to it. This would put it in the corner and help focus it all in one direction. Kind of like when you put a sub in the corner of the living room. I might be totally wrong because I have never done this before, but that's what it looks like to me.

I vote for vertical slot since people like to stick their arms/hands in the port and I like to throw shirts or paper in the port.  Vertical port makes that easier.  Then again, this is a 4th with a short port instead of a ported box with long port.  Either way, I think it'll look good!

Got the port made!! Went with a top port. Started extra long at first and went shorter till it sounded best.. this is when I wish i had an SPL meter.. lol..  I also got the sides prepared for resin and fiberglass (which I'll do tonight)..

Now I have another question for those with experience with 4ths.. the subs aren't playing lows very well (anything 28 and below). By that I mean they aren't very loud compared to higher notes.. with that said, would lowering the internal volume of the sealed chamber help at all? Thanks for any input

I want to say that @DavidClark had to increase his sealed side in order to get lower, at the expense of lowering the peak tuning. But I may be wrong

Progress last night.. fiberglassed the sides and 2 layers of primer on the ported section.. look pretty good I think..

Also, thanks reedal for that info.. since I'm unable to enlarge the sealed section, I'll prolly try polyfill in it to see if it helps..

Looking good! It looks like you could make two ports to swap back and forth from ground pounder to spl.

"Increase" sealed side W polyfill

Shrink port area and or increase port length to get desired low end extension

No. Not unless you have cone control issues. Lowering the internal volume of the sealed chamber would also lower the resonance. This would hurt because the sealed chamber strongly dictates low end response. Lowering the sealed volume would also lower efficiency.

Assuming you do not have any cone control issues, I would add polyfil to the rear chamber to start, and go from there.

Thanks guys for all the input. I'll add the poly fill and see how it works.. about how much do y'all think I'll need?

Also made progress on the build. Got the sides fiberglassed 5 layers thick. Body filled them and sanded smooth. They are now in their final resting place. Tomorrow I'll paint the ported section and hopefully have time to start wrapping the wall with the vinyl.
