My assumption (currently) is that the head unit controls basic functions like volume, fade, etc. and that the DSP controls crossovers.  Not 100% sure, man.  Thats why you have to test ?

Actually the infinity/alpine systems have the volume & fader built into the amp, he is right. The volume control and fader is handled via can-bus (orange white/white wires in harness) and the pre-amp outputs are full range fixed. Also, the factory woofer is bp'ed somewhere like 35hz-80hz/24db which is why you might not have that much output below 30hz. Every output at the factory amp is either bp'ed or hpf & summing these together with an OEM audio integration box will help greatly when tuned correctly. The factory woofer signal is usually a pita with low tuned enclosure because you end up needing to boost it below 30hz which again, requires an integration box.

@slowfkncar, here are two pics we took when we removed my buddy's jeep head unit:

Back of the head unit:

The plug going INTO the DSP from the head unit:

So grabbing signal at the preamp wires wont help since volume control is handled via the orangewhite/white wires?

Also, have you used an OEM integration box for these style vehicles?  We looked around for one a month or so ago and couldnt find what we were looking for, but maybe I was looking for the wrong thing.  Great input, thanks man.

Although you mentioned the signal is bandpassed, Spanka showed some measured voltage values that show it is undergoing a frequency cutoff around 74Hz and continuously sloping off.  Im curious about that.

Okay i remember testing it once before, i might be a little off but it was something along the lines of Woofer 35-80hz / front doors 80-500hz / front dash 500hz^ / rear doors 35hz^

Also, forgive me when i speak of OEM integration i was referring to using an RF360.3 or any compatible multi-channel summing device with some ability to EQ his factory signals. Yes I've used them on amplified chryslers with pretty good results but nothing beats a new head unit lol. Look at the stereo harness, it's got power, ground, left spk, right spk and everything els is handled through the white-white/org (ignition, dimmer, amplifier, fader ect)

I have tried using the pac c2a-chy5 also but it still had fixed volume control. On a side note, the RF360.3 has its own volume control built into its control center knobs and can be used as volume if tapping the factory stereo pre-amp. It also has multiple inputs and can be selected with the knobs right at the control center.

Damn, thats a bummer. But im glad you've already done a lot of the footwork.
