Fordbronco1995
Hey everyone, so i have been happy with my two JL Audio 10” subs in a pre fabbed box, the box size is a bit awkward at roughly 26Wx12Hx12D I was looking the other day and decided to make a custom box since ive always wanted to make one. After i took some measurements of what would work and the cu ft needed per sub i was ready to get to it. I will be making a sealed box, easier on space and i like the tighter bass. So my new box will be 37”Wx14”Hx7”D it will fit right between my spare tire and rear wheel well. I will gain 6.5”x37” of cargo floor space back going with this new box, doesnt sound like much but i think it will help tremedously with space. With it being wider and shallower and slightly taller the air space in the box will be slightly larger than recommended for my subs but my subs are discontinued and the new replacements require slightly more cu feet than my current subs and if i ever need to replace them ill be covered. Day 1: Got a 4’x8’ sheet of .75” mdf board from lowes, started to make some cuts and mock the box up Also going to install some bracing on the outer walls and center support Got the front panel marked out, ran out of light so will have to wait until tomorrow to cut it, also got the cutouts for the subs marked. It will be assembled using a combination of nails with the nail gun and loctite pl adhesive, the adhesive will do most the work, the nails will just aid in holding it in place until the adhesive cures Got some duratex roll on coating to put on when its all assembled https://www.acrytech.com/product-category/speaker-cabinet-coatings/ Day 2: got the rest of the pieces cut, i got the bottom, back and side walls adhesived and nailed together The piece in the center is the center support, its just slid in there to help support the top and bottom until it cures, once cured i will adhesive the center support in and then the face with the hole cutouts will go in last. I did my best to use the adhesive to help seal the box inside with a thin bead all the way around. Man does that stuff get everywhere lol Also keep in mind this will be in the back with a interior mounted spare. 37” is max width with still leaving just enough room to clear the wheel well and spare tire. Day 3: Adhesived the center support braces on the center support. got the center support adhesived in and nailed Day 4: Just lack cutting out the holes for the subs and deciding on what im doing for the speaker connections but i just ended up getting some 5/16x3” stainless carriage head bolts and cut the head off, drilled two 5/16 holes on each side and got the bolts mocked up and my wire pre run. I have some red and black model paint that im going to use to paint the centers of the bolts just to make sure i keep the pos and neg in the same spots, also plan on installing some wire hold downs to secure the wires in place The amp will be mounted in the square that is marked. Also if anyone is curious the wires are run that way because my subs are svc 4 ohm subs and the amp will put out 500 watts rms at a 2 ohm load, the amp will see the two svc 4 ohm subs wired in parallel as a 2 ohm load thus putting out the 500 watts giving each sub 250 Day 5: Went to cut out the holes for the subs, man i messed up, i got off just a little bit on my mark, the first hole i cut i had the jig saw on the wrong setting and i fought it all the way around, the second one i adjusted and got it pretty damn good, but the mistake was already made luckily i had a extra piece so i had to re cut it. Remarked the sub cutouts and going to try again lol This second piece may fit better than the first, just have it halfway mocked up in there for now Day 6: Ok so having the jigsaw on the right setting and taking it a little slower is the key lol, finally got them cut out, cleamed up with some 80 grit sand paper. Got it adhesived and nailed in place Also got the studs for the speaker wire painted to orient pos and neg. Day 7: started sanding on the box, i was originally going to do 45 degree edges all the way around but it would be too hard to make them consistent so i decide to first sand a 45 in the edge and then round them. Got the first knock down with 80 grit, still have to do the upper front seam and all the edges on the long runs and put a thin swipe of duraglass on the left and right sides to fill some tiny imperfections Day 8: Got all the edges, front, back, top and bottom roughed in, still have to finish the left and right sides with a swipe of duraglass then sand the entire box out with 180 grit. The edges are more round than in the pictures Day 9 Got my first coat of duratex on the bottom, just experimenting with the texture, i probably will end up doing 2 or 3 coats over the entire box. I think it will match my black vinyl floor nicely. This stuff is crazy, dries to the touch in about 10 min. Day 10: Ok got two coats on, this stuff covers great and i probably will have only used a pint by the time i put two more on. Heres some pics inside with a little better light than under the back porch Lol you know i just couldnt put those old jl’s in a new box lol My old jl subs are only rated at 200 watt rms each, i recently upgraded to a 500 watt rms alpine mono amp. Paper that came with it said that alpine squeezed out 520 ish watts at 2 ohm. These new jl subs are 300 watt rms each but jl reccomends to power them with 200-300 watt rms each, so my amp should be putting down about 250-270 watts rms per sub, enough to get em boomin but not too much to work em to their absolute limit
Ron36
Box looks great , I’ve learned when it’s your first box u use a ton of glue and nails just to maksure it’s sealed . The only thing I see wrong is the subs . Lol. My first box I used so much glue I ended up grinding most of it off when it was dry. 2022 Ford Maverick on 22’s Skar SK1500.1 on 4 Skar VD-8’s Mids Sundown Super tweeters, Skar TX 6.5 components on Skar SKM400.4 LC2 for audio control , XS Power D680 XS Series Extra Battery
Fordbronco1995
Yeah i know these subs are a joke to most on here, these are barely considered a entry sub but i just like pairing speaker brands, i have a alpine head unit with 500 watt mono amp and JL component speakers and JL 10” subs. It serves my purpose. I know to most of you guys this is barely even considered a good setup lol and i can respect that

timc31610
Looks awesome, only thing I would recommend is stripping that duratex from around where the subs mount. Even though it dries to the touch in a few minutes, it takes a few days to cure and if you mount your subs too soon you will essentially glue them into place. This comes from experience...lol My Build Log 94 Civic http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/188644-94-civic-4-door-build-loq-suggestions-wanted-will-be-super-slow-mo/ Faceebook reluctantly
