Fiberglassing Pillar Pods.....

Recommended Posts

Ok, I just finished fiberglassing the inside of my wall/sub enclosure, and will be starting on my first set of pillar pods in the next couple of weeks.

So I understand the making of the frame for a 4" component set, and how to stretch the material and paint it with resin.

Questions:

Whats best for gluing/attaching the stretched material to the plastic pillar, and the wood ring?

Do you guys use matte/cloth strips in your pillar pods, or just resin, then go over it with body filler?

What about that body filler that has fiberglass in it? Should I stay away from that?

Thanks, I'm learning as I go!

use CA glue, or a staple gun of some sort. some people use hot glue and it works, but depends on the application i guess. i'd recommend using the matting to add strength to the pod itself. at least 3 layers or so. the filler is just to help smooth it out, not really add any structural integrity. stay away from the filler with the glass in it when you're ready to sand it down to smooth it out. i find that it's harder to sand than if you use 'gold' filler

Hot glue gun to hold the rings in place. Hot glue will also hold the material in place fine. No need for staples. Resin it and let it dry. Very fine cloth matting ontop of the stretched material to give it strength. It's very easy to work with. Don't add too much at once or it'll sag. Once you can't flex the large areas of the pod it's time to add as much filler as you need to fill low points and generally smooth the lot out. Good luck!

Not to hate on the master hisself or nuthin....but why not use hot glue?

I used it on my pods to mount the rings and dowels and it worked perfectly.

I have heard that spray adhesive will re-liquify when resin hits it and w/ever it's holding will let go...but I have beeeen doing it that way and not had any issues with the 3m 70 or 77 either...so.....

I dunno.

I REALLY wanna try some CA Glue just to see the diff but I dunno.... if it's just "a luxury"...I generally get by just fine making things as hard on myself (haha hard on) as possible (one power outlet, mediocre tools, ZERO work space, etc) but I kinda pride myself on being able to get er done that way,and if I ever CAN aford/have the luxury I guess I couldnt turn it down.

i wouldn't use staples because if they are too long they will poke out or if they are too short they won't hold good enough when your are stretching the material.

oh and here are mine :D
