A&W ROOTBEER
im asking about output/loudness. if they're in the same built/type box and same vehicle. so 2 12's, 1000w and 1 12 2000w are the same? 2 12's will be louder because more cone area..BUT also because less heat..if your sending 2000 watts to 1 sub it will generate more heat and lose power..so it wont make the most of those 2000 watts..by sending 1k to 2 subs it is being more efficient.. Charger
This is something that can not be calculated very easily. I usually like cone area over power for distribution of heat and efficiency. Guest
so cone area > watts. more power to a sub = more heat = loss of efficiency. and what about that post #4, i dont get it
ALPINE408
so cone area > watts. more power to a sub = more heat = loss of efficiency. and what about that post #4, i dont get it hes talking about oh much the sub moves in and out Have you ever had your woofers blown? Guest
yea i know that, so cone area and xmax are the main factors in choosing between systems
deafyT
^^that's too generalized. you can have a sub with a sensitivity rating of 98db but a max power handling of say 300watts....that's a relatively 'low power' application by today's standards, right? So at 300 watts that sub is being worked to its full potential...maybe even heating up a bit. Now compare that to today's standard 80db sub with a max power handling of 2500watts....that sub won't even come alive until 1500-2kw. That doesn't mean the sub will run hot all the time and be less efficient than it already is (hard to be any less efficient than 80db). more cone area doesn't always mean more output by default. it's just easier to get that much cone area to move that much more air. Guest
ohhh i get it. put a basic "formula" or another example down on how cone area, watts, and sensitivity and how they all mesh together
deafyT
ps - what about post #4? xmax has been more of a marketing gimik lately than anything -- and it plays little into 'how loud' a sub will be. Example = the new RE Audio XXX. Look at all of today's subs with the overbloated xmax (and yes, they are overbloated, not even a handful of those subs can move that sub anywhere near the full xmax). Notice they all have an efficiency rating in the 80db range? Why would that be better than a sub with a 98db efficiency rating and a 5mm xmax? Xmax does not hinder a subs ability to perform. All in all, the more efficient sub will be louder. example v2 = i've seen Cerwin Vega Strokers get to 160db and they've got minimal linear movement....never seen RE Audio XXX reach that even though they say it can move 2' ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((in stereo))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) team audio thugz uuUhhHhhHhh. straight ghanxstuh since 2007.
