2 Ohms And 4 Ohms

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at an amp that outputs the same RMS wattage at both 2 ohms and 4 ohms. About that I have two questions:

1. If I do end up buying it, would it be better to run at 2 ohms or 4 and,

2. Why?

Sorry for the onslaught of noobish questions, but I want to make sure I'm getting the most for my extremely limited funds.

You may be offended by the above. Don't take it personally, I'm just abrasive.

if it pushes the same power at both 2 and 4 ohms, then it has a fully regulated power supply from what I understand, and it would make no difference in what ohm load you run the amp at because as long as the amp is stable at the lower ohm load you arent doing any damage to the amp and putting it through any excess stress. Someone correct me if I am wrong in any of this.

Loud as f*ck, and sounds good doing it.

BIG things to come.........

the jl audio slash amps do. idk any other ones off the top of my head.

Correct! as far as I know JL has the market on the RIPS aka regulated internal power supply. anywhere between 2 ande 4 ohms IIRC its going to putout the same wattage.

EDIT: IIRC its actually between 1.5 and 4 ohms.

Another question, what would the pros and cons be of running an amplifier with a regulated power supply? I understand you wouldn't be able to raise or drop the resistance to eek more power out, but besides that what problems could I run into getting an amplifier with a regulated power supply vs. one without?

flexability basically so you dont have to worry so much about matching voice coil impedance to your amps
