Not really, A car alt. will only put out what is needed. I battery charger will put out what it is designed to put out.

I have a 200 amp alt.

isn't that the same as charging your batteries with a 200 amp charger? (hypothetically)

I'm just trying to figure out what is healthy for my charging system without causing any damage

If I recall correctly, no it is not because the alternator is not supplying 200 amps at idle, so you would have to run at peak rpm to get it to put out all 200 amps. Correct me if I am wrong though

thats kinda what I was thinking. I need a battery charger that works the same way, or a smart charger that will shut off automatically.

I am very happy with the changer, its a Schumacher model Se-75 something.

I put it on the 2 amp charge for deep cycles. It will start out around 13 volts and end at 15.2 or .3 volts. And it will maintain them nicely too.

My two G31's rest at 13.2 when finished. I charge them both at the same time, it doesn't seem to bother it none.

I am sure there are better chargers out there but are you going to notice. (I am sure someone will say yes just to say yes.)

Yes, actually Gary a charger with a trickle charge option would be best. It continues to charge the batteries instead of shutting off and will keep charging them after they get to a desired point in order to give them an even higher resting voltage. I just had to say since you said someone would :D

also with a 200A alt its not like all 200A is going directly to your batteries. you have your cars computer, all the spark plugs and other electrical systems running so thats taking some of the juice away.

plus you have line loss. and what your amp is sucking at the time.

And far as the best connection ever.......

get a huge fucking battery, cut the top off, drop an alt in there and then pour all that into your big amplifier. or just smelt them all together.
