i have a alpine 9883. all of a sudden today while i was driving home it shut off then came on about 1 second later. it happend 6-7 times in a row. i thought it was getting hot from my heater so i felt behind the flace plate. it was the hottest i have ever felt a HU. i shut my heater off for about 10 minutes, the radio and the heater. i turned the radio back on and about 5 minutes happened it turned off again. if a HU gets hot would it turn off like a amp does?

Yes it can.

let the deck cool all the way down and check it's operation.

You might need to add a fan as it is common for these decks to run hot.

not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it. :)

the alpine i had got hot as hell all the time for some reason and had a built in fan, it was a 9823 older model but still worked but i sold it cause i was afraid it might get so hot it could melt somethin on the board and short something out, i have never had a headunit get as hot as that one did but all in all dunno why they would do that

Yeah man, first thing I would do is check ALL the speaker and wiring connections. What's strange though is that model should tell you that it's going into overload protection if that were the case, however the heater thing is weird too.

Basically as it is, you shouldn't need to add a fan to this H/U, Alpine usually does good with their H/U's as long as you're making the deck work how it should.

Check your ohm loads from all your speakers, the wiring and any shorts or such anywhere firstly.
