No, shape does not matter, as long as it's not prone to whistling or other odd noises you might hear. The MTX demo car a couple years back was a redish ACURA RSX w/ 5-9500 series 12's in a ported enclosure in the hatch and the port was a triangular Acura logo-pretty sick lookin IMO. I bet it's in the gallery on the mtx site if you look. Just build it the shape you want and test it, as long as your in^2 is right it should be kool.
