Boon
Copper weighs more so more mms hence lower fs, as mentioned. Aluminium dissipates heat better into the air. Copper for SQ, Aluminium for SPL IMO Quote 10.x volts fo' life!
HHR Ed
whoever said Aluminum is louder? I can name the 3 subs that have hit the highest scores ever in the world, and all have copper coils. There are trade offs to each and loud and SQ has more to do with soft parts and design. But as far as the AQ, I am not sure how they perform. Cr@sh
I read in "Advanced speaker designs" from radio shack, a book I bought years ago that performance was dependant on how the soft parts are balanced. If you had too much weight on the coil side it could bottom out and if too much on the surround, cap, and cone side it can come out of the magnet easier and have less control. A balanced speaker whether copper or aluminum would have great control if it's balanced weight wise. Quote My old install at cardomain, never finished! Forevrbumpn
All of the answers are correct stated 1) heavier, causing lower Fs 2) aluminum dissipate heat better, but copper can hold a pretty high temp 3) copper is a muh better SQ style coil that is for sure but also not listed is that toe to toe alum vs copper, all the specs change, since copper has a much lower resistance, if you use the exact same coil specs, wire gauge, layers, winding width, lets say 2" ww, on a 3" coil, 4 layers 20 gauge the copper will probably be about D1ohm, while the alum would be a D2-D3ohm The copper will have a Bl about 3 times that of the aluminum coil say 20 alum to a 60 for the copper The qts and qes change night and day, and vas will probably be cut in half of the aluminum So all in all, if you like great sound from a smaller box, go with copper another guy to ask about copper vs alum, I think was Jacob, he was telling me how he did some testing of copper vs alum coils... I have done testing between the 2, but it wasn't the greatest comparisons Quote I have a ritual called "terminator". I crouch in the shower in the "naked terminator" pose. With eyes closed I crouch for a minute and visualize either Arnie or the guy from the 2nd movie. I then start to hum the T2 theme. Slowly I rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me get through my day. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It sorta ruins the fantasy.
Moore941
I dont know of a speaker that dosent get warm after a few minutes of hard playing exactly but just the way he worded it sounded like they have no heat or anything at all, just wanted to clear that up being that i run a lvl5 18. And its not just a luke warm, its pretty dang hot, hasnt effected the sub at all though thing still pounds away day in and day out. And thats with the cleanest signal i can get out of my amp. And forevrbumpin is corect from what all ive read on the differences.
