it does suck but its the 4l60e and its known to have problems the guy who did mine was a GM master tech before opening his own tranny shop. WE bsed about it before he started and really knows his trannies. He warrantied it and I paid in cash. Small shop guys tend to like that approach. :D

Hey man if you have not drove your truck yet and its really cold where you live check your tranny fluid levels and before you drive let your truck warm up til your needle is half way between the hot and cold I found when i had that clunk noise the longer i let the vehicle warm up it didnt do that and since your not slipping outta gear i would say your friend is full of it abou only lasting 2 weeks give this a try and let me know...

Oh yea...you could do like above, but once your truck is warm..check your transmission oil and smell it. If it smells burnt, then your tranny is shot.

Have you since tried putting it into reverse?

Its possible that the ecu tried to select the wrong gear when you put it into reverse, that would explain both the bad clunk and grinding noises you heard, also would explain why it still drove fine in D. Which in turn means there may not be anything physically wrong with it just a once off where the ecu got 'confused'.

Also if your transmission oil is burnt it doesnt neccasarily mean that the transmission is shot, it can also mean your driving it too hard.

yeah... tranny removal and installation is a cake walk on a truck... just make sure you have a good floor jack and a buddy or two to assist you..

if yoru trans is shot get one and do it yourself.. if you can find a smnall jack you can put on your oil pan so you can suport it while the engine is out. and then pull the trans..

we did ours in our truck in our driveway. the hardest part is lifting it back up into the truck!

well just took it to a shop today and they got it fixed in 2 hours. it turns out it was a piece in the parking brake that broke off and was hanging up in my drums and wouldent let me go in reverse so its all good now only 85$ :D
