I also call bs on 980 taken out in just taxes on a 3500.00 pay check. Last check I made 4200+ and my fed was 600 and state was 250. This is with me claiming 0. OP--You gave us so much info that its completely impossible for any one to tell you what you did wrong. If you only had 1500 taken out in taxes for the full year, then what did you make? Did you include your student loans?? So many variables. Have someone do your taxes, like HR block and then if they come up with what you did, then don't pay for the service. If their numbers look better than yours go with them. At least you used govt in general and not someone who has only been President for a short brief moment in the history of taxes. You simply didn't have enough cut out of your paychecks. That's not Uncle Sam's fault. This year there is a $400 ($800 for married filing jointly) credit you get called the making work pay credit. Assuming your accountants aren't idiots, they included the required form to get you that $400 (or $800..dunno if you're married), so if you're still owing after that, then you're just not getting cut enough from your paychecks. I opted to not have my cut taxes lowered when the tax rates were lowered in the beginning of the year. I told my boss to continue cutting me the same as he was before the tax rate drop, and I'm getting a very nice refund. You can only blame yourself for not making sure you were cut enough. It is the taxpayer's responsibility to know this information. Take the increase and multiply it by the number of checks in the year and there is your difference. If you want to get more money back at the end of the year now, you'll need to change your deductions. You'll get less each paycheck to get more at the end of the year. I claim 0 for the first few checks and then claim 2 for the remaining of the year. I break about even. I either owe a couple hundred or get back a couple hundred.
