DDlincolnon22's
I hope someone here can help me out cause I am completely lost with this one. A friend of mine called me up today and said he got some new equipment and plans on installing it tomorrow. When he told me how he is planning on wiring it up I kinda stopped and scratched my head. He told me he was going to wire it straight to the alternator. I was like why? He told me that way it gets full power when it demands it. My question is what kind of effects is that going to have on the amp? I don't plan on trying this on my stuff, I'll stick with wiring it to the battery. But I am also curious as to what kind of stuff he should expect to happen. Can anyone answer this for me? kanes_disciple
I definitely dont think its a good idea because his alt will be putting juice to his amp and not charging his battery. Namosh
He won't be gaining anything by doing that. Think about the power wire running between the alt and the battery...If you hook to the alternator, you are still hooked to the battery via that cable. If you hook to the battery, you are still hooked to the alt via that cable. Quote My Ram Quad Cab Blow-through

Can anyone answer this for me? well first of all an amp requires 12 volt power and ur avergae alternator puts out anywhere from 13 to 14.7 volts so in my mind it seems he would be over powering the am causing it to blow all the time

bassl0va
well first of all an amp requires 12 volt power and ur avergae alternator puts out anywhere from 13 to 14.7 volts so in my mind it seems he would be over powering the am causing it to blow all the time If you draw it up you'll see that there's no difference. As long as he has done the big 3 there wont be a measurable difference. Think of it this way, you measure your voltage from your battery, and when the engine is going the alt is charging the battery with 13.8v (or more) and the volt meter says 13.8v (or whatever the alt is charging the battery with.) So he might as well do whatever is easiest. I'm not gonna tell him what he should or shouldn't do, It's not my stuff, I was just curious as to what would happen.
