chapo123 Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 why do people do L ports? my buddy said L ports make the box weaker so im doing a normal port for my box. its gonna be 3cuft tuned to 32hzfor my 12 btl . but my other friend said a L port makes the bass deeper and hits harder and is also louder on the lows?? is this true?? or just keep my design the same. the box is 23in deep and the port is 17.5in deep. 3.5in wide. 13in tall. and i also 45'd the corners. does 45ing em help the air flow? and does a wider port like mine (3.5) make the bass louder or deeper? sorry for the noob questions Steve I don't know why but everytime I see your new paint I want a Dr. Pepper...... is this normal? heres an analogy for you. running a high power stereo without a fuse is like having unprotected sex with that hot chick at the bar with the sketchy sexual history. Cashdollar2009 Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 both your buddies are retarded. This... And just think about it with the 45's, you are creating a much more lfuent path for the air to travel out of the box, therefore, yes. On 6/30/2011 at 1:11 AM, 'Ray' said: Acoustical energy is free. tlee2 Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 If anything i think it would make it stronger and yeah it would hit the lows more cuz it would be tuned lower(vs a regular port in the same sized box) 6 Sundown X 15s 2 Sundown NS1 V2s C Pillar 4th order Bagged Suburban on 24s http://youtube.com/tlee333

The longer the port the lower the tune. The bigger the Area of the port the more area you have to make noise but the higher the tune. So there is a trade off- but if you make a really big area long port, then you get more radiating Area for more racket (the size of the port) with the lower tune (the length of the port). Yes, doing 45s helps the air flow. BUT- if you don't have to "L" shape your port, then you don't have to worry with that anyway. 12 - 12"s in the STAY PUFT 1989 Chevy Astro Build & Comment Log Un-Interrupted Build LogYouTube Channel Chevy Trailblazer 5.1 Dolby Digital DTS Install You have a beard of a mysterious sea captain. OldsBoomer Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 most "L" ports are shaped longer because to achieve the desired tuning the port is longer then the box is deep there for have to make the bend to get the required port length to get the desired tunning frequency. It sure doesn't make the box weaker.. good lord colin you beat me to it... damn Suburban Coming Soon
Miakehl Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 In an L port... Making the port wider tunes higher subsequently reducing internal volume of the box. Smaller ports tune lower. Why I have no clue, something to to with loaded and unloaded spring mass of the standing air of the port. The air in a smaller port moves easier with lower freqs because of the overall weight of the air inside making it resistant to move at high freqs to easier to move at lower ones and vise versa with larger ports. Also, it is late and I could be stupid. This is just what I've noticed in my own studies, YMMV. And yes, 45ing the corners improves airflow, just make sure the port stays the same width throughout the whole port. Like if you 45 the interior corner, it's be best to take that off of the opposing corner, to keep it the same width, mostly for good measure. I dunno what would happen if the port got larger or smaller within itself but I'm sure it can't be good for sound. As far as "Why" I'm 95% sure its to fit a longer port in a shorter box. say you need 25 in of port length but the box is only 17 in deep, you bend the port. Also, a port is a port. Square, round, obtuse, L shaped, straight, or aero. Literally a tube in the box that holds spring loaded air that causes the air trapped inside it to act as another driver at a certian freq based upon the dimensions of the port and goofy mechanical specs of the driver that really don't make that much difference and manufacturers probably make up anyway. Hope I helped, Fuck, I'm tired. [HOONIGAN]* '01 Ford F-250 LWBJVC KD-R950BT / Alpine MRV-M500 / (2) SWA-10s4

Longer port, lower tune; in some cases you have to increase enclosure size if you increase the port length in order to get the desired tuning frequency and volume because of port displacement... Calculate the 45s' displacement so you make sure they don't take up too much space and throw your tuning off...
