4Ω vs 2Ω vs 1Ω etc.....

Ohms law homie

Voltage = Current X resistance

That is LAW and is always true. So if resistance goes down, current has to go up to keep the same voltage. How regulated amps work is they regulate the voltage to match the resistance so you get the same power at 1 ohm or 8 ohms. You see?

Very clearly, thanks!

I'm new to the world of car audio... What is THD? And how can a lower ohm load give more power than a higher ohm load? I know that it is harder for an amp to push the same amount of current through a higher ohm load... But if two different amps are designed to give the same amount of rms power, albeit at different levels of resistance, are the both still different?

THD-

Total harmonic distortion is a measure of the how much a given audio device may distort a signal through the introduction of added harmonics or overtones. These figures are usually given as percentages. THD figures below approximately 1% are inaudible to most people. However, distortion is a cumulative phenomenon, so that if a receiver, equalizer, signal processor, crossover, and amplifier are all rated at "no greater than 1%THD", together, they could produce 5%THD, which may well be noticeable in the perceived sound.

In you can understand terms,

THD means the amount of gain you add to the signal that is being played once it distorts in percentage. So if you have 10% THD then you will be making alot of power, BUT chances are the woofers won't last long with the level of power on them, POWER is what blows a woofer, NOT distortion. Power creats distortion because you are clipping the signal, a square wave makes more power then a sin wave.

well a regulated amp isnt that good. itll work for 1ohm and 2ohm but past that they will drop off like any amp.

amps can be made to do more power at 2ohm than 1ohm but the vast majority will do more power at a lower ohm load. and as for "why?" well its less resistance, if one car has less drag itll go faster correct? same shit here. less opposition/resistance to the flow of electricity. but more current means more heat in the amp and heat is the #1 killer of amps.

If I answered you in a well mannered, informative way, you asked a good question or had a good attitude. If I was an asshole, you asked a stupid question or you had a fucktard attitude... or I was in a bad mood.

I have tested JL and Memphis amps, different model, they did same power at 1 ohm or 4 ohm or any in between. I was using a generalized point when I said 1 or 8 ohm, but in tested I have seen the same on regulated 1-4 ohm.

well... a clipped signal doesnt make more power just because its clipped. the amp is pushing the signal past a useable point but still adding power. the reason a clipped signal blows a speaker is because the speaker actually moves less and has a pause at the top and bottom of its throw. this means that the speaker isnt moving air around the coil like it should and isnt cooling properly. then it transforms into a slinky.

And that is funny cuz I haven't ran or tested a rf amp since the punch 75, that was one amp that ran very damn hot!!!
