Mechman Alternators

Mechman portable charger

Recommended Posts

a 7hp motor is going to be rather large size wise.

hell the 5hp 220volt motor on my cabinet saw in my garage is huge. I couldnt image trying to tote around a 7hp all over. LOL

Hell of an idea tho!!!

Im sure with a correct pully size you could get that alternator spinning pretty fast, but once a load is on the alt the rpms will drop drastically

.

But like Tony is saying, I kind of have to agree with that. I know under full load my high output alternators claim to use up 16-18hp each.

How the horse power from a vehicle differs to an electric motor I dont know, but Id assume Horsepower is horsepower no matter what type of motor,

i think its being used as a charger, not a power supply. It would probably work ok, however pretty wasteful, for a battery charger :D

This concept would be more useful along the lines of the people who thinks it's 100% legit to plug the batteries into a charger and demo all day with the car off.....

Guess I'd better take down the lightning rod quick charger. Dang. Limiting current is stupid. :)

One minor problem here. Lets assume a 300 Amp alt at 14V = 4200 watts output. Assume 80% efficiency to convert the energy: so input to the electric motor = 5250 watts. So at 110V that would be 48 amps (not gonna happen). You would need a 30 Amp 220V setup with a 7 horsepower motor. Cool idea though

Even a 5 HP motor will also work !!! As this will be used when giving demo the current demand would not be continuous and these ac motor can take some overloading !!!

The one used in the photo is a similar one approx 3-5 HP , but the alternator is also a small one maybe 220 amps.

The coolest part about this to me is the demonstration of energy transfer. It starts as 120V AC from the wall, goes into the electric motor, converts to mechanical energy, then the alt turns it back into electrical energy, but this time it comes out as 12v DC. Cool Beans

I agree with tony any you....

but my comment goes to show the difference between electric power and gas (motor) etc power...

So most people have rode a dirtbike.... ever rode a electric dirtbike tho?

They are wild.... insane amout of torque # for # vs a gas bike its much much quicker, but they top out very fast....

Electric motors have really advanced over the last few years same with the batteries

My bike has 18nm of (force) seems like a shitload cuz its all upfront unlike with gas

The new ones have 64 nm and 54 horsepower..... nuts if you ask me

Look up zero bikes :)

Thoes bikes sure make it seem like that thing would work
