mmacleod1983
I did big three and lights are dimming on dash and headlights are dimming bad at night I had battery and alternator checked both showed fine Im guessing the load on the alternator is too much and I purchased a new XS battery Havent changed the alternator or replaced battery yet Today driving down the road my battery indicator on my dash shot all the way up to the over charge side. I pulled over and shut my truck down. Checked all my wires and everything looks good and tight Started my truck turned off all my equipment and gauge read fine again put volt meter on my battery and im getting 13.97 volts slightly less than the 14.28-14.36 I usually get. Is my alternator on the way out? I have a blinker light that is out and is constantly shorting on my dash. It will show light out then go off then show light out back and forth real fast. Could this short be causing problems? Or is my alternator just on the way out? I keep getting terrible blue corrosion on the negative terminal which I read can be due to an undercharging situation. I clean all the cables and two or three days later the corrsion is back. Even snows over the dielectric grease that covers everything
never knows best
sounds like your losing ground connection. double check all connections are clean. make sure its metal to metal contact.
meade916
if your alternator is charging from 13.9 to 14.4 like you just said it does, that is 100% normal. As for the volt meter shooting higher than that, you might have a different problem. Are you able to monitor your voltage while driving to see how high you actually get it to go? audiofanaticz
What kind of vehicle do you have? Some newer vehicles monitor the current draw though the ground cable (newer GMs are good for this). When users do the big 3 upgrade and remove those stock wires and replace them with new larger wires and bypass the clamp that is used for the vehicle to monitor the charge they will experience similar types of issues. mmacleod1983
I left all the original wires along with adding the big three the truck is an 06 dodge ram 1500 stock 136 amp alternator battery is Interstate 975 cca 65ah battery is 4 years old I am running 1500 watts rms 1000 rms to subs at 2 ohms 500 rms at 2 ohms to highs and mids I have no way of monitoring voltage other than a volt meter connected to positive and negative of amps and the factory dash indicator. the dash indicator dips way below the half way mark and shows low charging when at idle or during heavy bass When I have stereo playing I am getting terrible voltage drop. All the way into the 10.7 volts It does charge at 14 volts when idling with no music on. Low volume music it drops to 13.7 volts. During big low bass tracks in the 35hz or lower region, at 3/4 volume, I get severe voltage drop into the 10 volts region and the subs clip and lose all clarity. My gains are set at 1/3 of the way up and bass boost is on zero
mcfalcon
You sir might be clipping. Well actually you stated that. Do you have a way to set your gains? Still learning but have started gathering.
mmacleod1983
I dont see how Icould be clipping. THe subs only clip due to the voltage drop. When I installed the amp and one sub was running at 4 ohms my gains were set with a DD-1. Now that I have added another sub and dropped down to 2 ohms my gains have not changed and I am getting severe voltage drop. I dont have access to the DD-1 until after christmas holidays. so no way of checking gains. I still dont see my gains being too high because my amp is turned way down any lower and my subs are practically making no bass at all. Ive turned the gains down and I get less voltage drop but its because I literally have no bass at that point Will clipping cause severe voltage drop??? mcfalcon
Yes I believe clipping will pull more current. May I ask what amp you are running? Still learning but have started gathering.
