Does cone aera have anything to do with SQ?

Recommended Posts

O geez SQ is NOT and i repeat NOT meant to be loud at all. I would never use an 18" in a SQ setup. I would run maybe two 10"s sealed but thats it. Your mids and high are supposed to blend very "smoothly" which mean bass isn't louder then mids and highs and vice versa.

I put a Peavey Low Rider 18" in my buddy's escort and it sounded like GOD!

well personally i'd rather run smaller subs and maybe 1-2 more in sealed enclosure. I can get a good flat response with the subs and I like the double beats with smaller subs on lower power levels.

My first massive cone area setup is my home theater. With 8 18" subs, I can tell you there can be incredible SQ with large subs and a lot of cone area. . .minimizing excursion can definitely add to the overall SQ.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.

I'm going to disagree.

Cone area really has nothing to do with SQ to a certain extent.

That's like saying you can only uses 6.5 inch mids.

That kinda my idea behind building a good sounding system... Have tons more cone area and power than you need and back it down... Just b/c the subs have 3" of throw doesn't mean you need to use it... Lowering the excursion of the woofer makes it much more responsive.

To get my truck to blend and pay flat... My highs may be full tilt but my sub control is all the way down and it blends perfect... The sub only sees maybe 1/4" of excursion tops.

There are, and have been, many SQ guys using 15" and 18" subs. This is mainly due to the fact that with a larger cone you need less excursion for a given loudness, thus reducing distortion.

Answer to your openingspost and your latest question: Nothing!

You can use the biggest, brutal subwoofer and still use it for SQ!

It all depends on the box!

Just create a lineair responsing box. (the flat sound stage wich was refered to)

And use Real-Time-Analising (RTA) measurment to connect it to the kicks/mids en highs of your system.
