There is no need to go faster than your comfortable with and try to keep up with a group that's more advanced than you. Also remember it's when were commuting on routes we usually take that we get comfortable and careless with. Seen many people go down just from there complacientcy (sp?) with commuter routes. I've hit massive jumps doing 70mph in the dirt so I'm excited to finally put the rubber to the road!
