Re-Building Pair of 15" UFO Style BTLs

Recommended Posts

Dear god those look nice. 2nd pic is cool with the other BTL peeking at you from the background. :good:

What are the chances I could get the already-custom sub I have in my sig re-coned by you? PM me if you'd like.

Depends on what it is... I don't do a whole lot of custom re-cones due to time restraints, though.

It's the BTL with the single-slug, really wide motor, like the ones pictured in this thread. They look like a stereotypical UFO you could say. The older style weren't as wide, and had double-or-triple stacked motors.

2nd generation. 1st gen was the triple stack, 3rd gen is the neodymium.

Oh, thanks. I didnt know each generation had a nickname (besides this current one). Thanks for the little history lesson :)

Depends on what it is... I don't do a whole lot of custom re-cones due to time restraints, though.

When you attach the voice coil to the cone how do you do that? Do you place the voice coil in the gap then attach the cone to the coil, or do you do it outside of the woofer?

We do it with the coil and spider assembly glued down to the frame and shimmed out.

Of course when making a drop-in kit we don't glue the spider pack down while attaching the cone -- but it is in the motor shimmed out while gluing the cone on.

It makes sure the cone is aligned correctly.
