dog24fret
I read in a post from someone about using caps.He was told not to use them because they were bad for the electrical systems.I was taught to always use one and did not know they could be harmful.I could not find anymore info in here about that.So if someone would kindly do so please explain this to me. Skullz
Caps are mainly devices used to smooth the flow of current so you don't have fluctuations and useless with drops in voltage which is why in 12v systems they aren't recommended. Your best bet is to add another battery or upgrade the one you have for more capacity. MrSkippyJ
Caps can be very useful if used for the right reasons. For a majority of the people with systems they aren't needed or wouldn't make a noticeable difference. They do nothing to help a weak electrical system, although they won't really hurt it either. With a strong electrical system that can keep up with the demands, a cap can help to smooth any ripples in the power. Most people don't need them and few could even tell the difference. tonedeaf
Caps are considered a drain on an electrical system. They basically 'stock' up extra power for when the subs need it NOW for that low note or what have you. The reason they are considered a drain is because once they discharge that stocked up energy, they need to be recharged, which puts extra strain on the alt/battery etc. 99% of the time they are useless and you will not notice a difference, and they can strain the electrical for no real gain. It's like putting a bandaid on a broken finger, it won't really help at all and is probably a waste of time. Using a splint instead (more batteries, bigger alt, etc.) will make it 'heal' alot better. dog24fret
Ok did know they were supposed to smooth out the power ripples but not the rest so thank you.So that means in my wifes car that I'm finishing up don't hook up the cap.I will be doing the big three upgrade on it this weekend. On that subject so I don't wast post space will 4gauge work in her car 99 Ford Escort.Really not enough room for 1/0 wire. The cap in my van should come out cause the van has a near constant 14 volt output 99Ford E-150 conversion van. Thanks guys for clearing it up. You can do some research on the forum and webs and find A LOT of good info without even asking, and that´s exactly what you did before asking about the big3 so you are cool!! Anyways, since the OEM wires aren´t in the car for audio systems, they have a lot of resistence, you need to upgrade them, but specially 3, wich are: 1) Ground from battery to chassis 2) Ground from chassis to engine block 3) Positive from Alternator to battery By changing those wires, you gain A LOT, i can tell you this, my explorer went from 14.2v to 14.8v by doing this Quote I´m the SPL Gains topic creator!! wanna get louder?? check this: SPL Gains.
