Hi, I just bought a JL 10" W7 with a JL 500/1, so far so good, but today driving my way to home, I was blasting some Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy and i started smelling like smoking wood, like burning wood, so I touch the ring of the W7 (I have the box on my backseats of a dodge ram) and is not so hot, so i started blasting music again and 1 min later it smelled like wood was burning.

So i get home and smell the port and it smells like smoking wood, is this normal?

No it isnt normal, if it was we would have subwoofer flavored jerky.

Turn the gain down on your amplifier, listen to it for a bit and see if the smell persists.

Bassless once again. Can't seem to keep a system for more than a few weeks :)

Saving for a '06 Nissan 350z, look for build around June 2012.

You started blasting away without any "break-in" period? Some people dont agree with this but many people do, new audio should be treated like a new engine, gradually broken in.....dont just go balls to the walls. :werd_msword:

Yeah I didn't "break-in" the sub. It was working perfect the whole week except today.

My gain on the amp is not high at all, is at 10 o'clock, is there anything else besides not "breaking-in" the sub and having the gain bellow middle...thats making the sub heat up the box?

Nothing like the smell of smoked birch...lol. Just make sure the inside of your box is super clean, and calm it down on the "balls to the wall" playing. You should be clean.

Is there alot of saw dust in the box?

Not that I know of, the box came prefabricated (bought it via internet).

And that's why I bought a W7, to pound it hard...whats the point of having a $600 (obv didn't cost me 600) sub if you cant play it loud?

Also I would agree about "balls to the wall" playing if i had a 1000/1, but I only have a 500/1 at half gain...

this thread made me lol..mostly because overpriced jl shit is getting destroyed by a user who likes to use the gain knob like a volume knob.

c'mon now, if i was shooting an 8 year old, it wouldnt be MY 8 year old.

i recently got a Pyle PL1590BL and i was building an enclosure for it tuned to 25 hz. i didn't have any tools to cut a circle so i hit it with a big hammer.
