Must have money to throw around. I on the other hand, don't. So instead, I buy equipment that is better quality than JL, and cheaper at the same time. I buy things because of their quality, not their price tag. Bassless once again. Can't seem to keep a system for more than a few weeks Saving for a '06 Nissan 350z, look for build around June 2012.

Heres my two cents. i always get worried that i'm clipping the shit outta my sub, sometimes just because it's loud. sometimes i smell what i think is coil, but is actually the smell of the box, spray paint (i'm cheap ), caulking, wood glue, etc... my point being is that if the smell is subtle, then it could just be the smell of the box when the subwoofer is playing. smell the port (if ported) or the box when the sub is playing and when it's not playing. see if it smells similar. also, smell it after a few hours of not bumping. hope that helps! I don't have the skills, tools or a place to build a box. blackrosetiger Posted June 12, 2011 Report Posted June 12, 2011 to the op: just so you know clipping and distortion are not the same thing. Usually a clipped signal is inaudible. Do your homework and fix your own problem. Do NOT trust a shop to do it for you. Its your money into your system not theirs. MOST shops (not all) either don't care or know how to CORRECTLY set amp gains. Case in point next time your in your local shop, ask them if they have an oscilloscope. When they go "what's an oscilloscope?" RUN! The ONLY way to CORRECTLY set your gains its to use one. (with the exception of the DD-1). If they tell you they set the gains with a DMM (Digital Multi Meter) they're just guessing by the voltage NOT the signal. You could still be clipping. Hence the heating up of your coils. Or it could even be before your signal even gets to the amp. Once it reaches you amp, your amp does what its designed to do and AMPLIFIES the clipped signal. Like I said do your homework. They had it and yes... I was doing it ALL WRONG!!! They helped me and my truck sounds waaaaayyyy better, my sound seriously improved by a ton and the sub sounds super clean. Honestly I haven't heard live any DC or Fi sub, but to me, this JL 10" W7 is the best sub that I have heard, it's a million times better than your 12" subs from the other "mainstream" retailers.

If your gain is set low "at 10 o'clock" (slight turn) or way to high at almost a full turn "10 o'clock" If your bass boost on you hu is turned way up that'll funk your world up no matter what power your amp is rated for My builds: my caddy my 'hoe friends impala

Even then, you could put it in a quadrouple bypass 22nd order fully inverted bandpass t-line box & make it sound louder...or something like that. (Yes, I'm being sarcastic. My HU is a Clarion DVD unit VRX755. It has BASS BOOST (ON or OFF) and you can adjust the Bass, it has Gain (goes from 0 db to 16db), it has Freq (goes from 50hz to 120hz) and it has a Q function (goes from 1 to 2). Same thing for mids and highs.
