Get past your bull headed 'I know it all notions' and just listen to the people trying to help you. Im pretty sure the people whove been doing this shit for 15+ years would already be using massively clipped signals if thats what was needed. Clearly since noones doing it, it isnt helping. Most of the 'extra power' your pushing from your system is burnt off as heat anyways, most of the time hurting your score rather than helping it. God forbid you start blowing equipment. Decaf Posted June 22, 2011 Report Share Posted June 22, 2011 not trying to be a debbie downer, i seriously would be concerned if people play this, let me make some screen shots so you can see what "DC" is and looks like and why speakers cannot play it so a clipped sine wave is DC? well no not entirely... its almost constant current, not dc by definition since it crosses the x axis duty cycle approaches 100% which means speaker is seeing + or - voltage almost the entire time speaker has to try to play multiple frequencies at once since thd goes flying out the door with large amounts of clipping (plays harmonics of the fundamental frequency) power increases enormously with clipping as does the needed heat dissipation not directing this to anyone in particular, but it doesn't help going in-depth about waveforms when u can simply say clipping creates the heat that ruins the glue which lets the vc come loose... that is if it doesn't reach xmech first Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
HHR Ed Posted June 22, 2011 Report Share Posted June 22, 2011 I will speak for the super high SPL serious competitor here. Recordings of various levels have been tested over and over since the 90s. This is not a new notion. To the professional competitor, great pains are taken to setup a system with the proper source, wire, processors and amplifiers and then great time and care is taken to test and set all of the levels and adjustments to achieve maximum SPL. It has been found that tones recorded at 0 dB will yield the best results. A competitor tracks the max unclipped volume of the source unit and adjusts amps accordingly. If their testing shows a soft clip can improve their score, they simply go up a volume click or 2. Going up too much has been proven to drop SPL scores and possibly cause damage. If they do not have enough signal, then something is not adjusted correctly and they simply retest and retune to find that sweet spot yet again. The results I have been privy to of tests with over 0 dB recordings had yielded unsatisfactory results and thusly those recordings were not used in competition. Decaf Posted June 22, 2011 Report Share Posted June 22, 2011 also... the material being played should always be clean or as close to clean as possible. +2db is still unacceptable as ed noted for a burp the competitor clips the amp by going a few clicks past max volume, they do not use clipped tracks to start. you didnt listen to what hhr ed said when you use a +2db "soft clip" tone that does not translate to equivalent soft clip on every amp. soft clip can be just +.5db or less and that is actually alot of clipping compared to most competitors who run 0db tones Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But the maximum score will drop. And all the other negative things that will happen said in this thread. And also this: because of the big amount of clipping the spiders could/will get damaged too.
