Sub turn on malfunction

The other day I ran across a problem with my system. When I have my stereo turned down (less than 50%) and with a song that doesn't produce much bass, sometimes my sub won't play any music. It will appear to be completely off, but I know that my amp is getting power because it lights up and the works. If I turn my volume up to about 80% then it will usually kick on and I can lower the volume back to where it was and it will play the song for a while, but will usually shut off again. If I play a heavy bass song at a loud volume I have no problem at all with it and the sound quality is the same as always. (loud and obnoxious ) If system specs are needed please ask.

Note that during this whole dilemma my headunit and amp have power. I will be playing a song at low volume and my sub will just shut off completely and won't produce any sound. If I turn the volume up on my headunit to almost max the sound will usually come back on and will play normal. I can then turn the volume back down to a lower volume and it will continue to play till a random point where it will stop playing again. This only happens at low volume. At a higher volume the sub acts and sounds normal, no problems. It's just at low volumes when there isn't much bass in a song that my sub will shut off and not play. I haven't checked the connections behind my headunit, but the connections to my amp are all proper and the neg and pos to the back of the sub are fine. I haven't checked the connections inside the enclosure either.

Are you using RCA inputs or speaker level inputs?

I'm using the black and red rca cables.

I am thinking something is loose, thus why when you have low bass coming and not much pressure and vibrations, it stops. Then when you bring in lots more bass it moves something maybe back into place.

I remember mu first system with a xplod deck and amp did the same thing.. maybe that's the issue.

i had the same problem with a woofer just recently. it is most likely a blown woofer. just take it out and see if it smells burnt. also after my subs were cold like after sitting for awhile with out music i would press on the cone and see if there was any movement and there was but i had to push hard so i knew for sure it was blown.
