mixing a " regular wet cell" and an AGM battery

Recommended Posts

Can somebody please tell me why I should not use the stock battery under the hood and add an AGM battery in the back? I hear you aren't soppsed to to do it but why?

It might be due to different charging / resting voltages / discharge rates shrug.gif

I don't think it damagas anything. I think they charge at different rates (and possibly different voltages) so over all, you get less out of your charging system than you would if you matched them.

ive been told that a agm is like a deep cycle battery and would be fighting the front battery to stay charged and what knot but i have a wet cell battery up front and a agm in back and have no problems at all

a wet cell battery u have to keep the water levels just right or they wont charge, vs a agm witch is advanced gell membrane doesn't have that problem so its more suitable for any application really

i think this is why they make those battery isolators, so with engine off u run off back battery so u will have the front battery to get u home if rear one goes dead

theres so many mixed views about this, but thats what ive heard

here's a link to my system 99 toyota tacoma , 2 mtx 8000 1504's in a sealed downfire , 1000w memphis amp

here's a link to my other system my 90 geo prizm test car

OK the reasons it is not a good idea is because a wet cell battery and AGM battery have different chemistry make ups. The AGM over time will pull the wet cell down. No way to know how long that will take, but it is not going to cause any damage to anything except for pulling down the front battery.

There is NO reason to run an isolator in this type of application. Isolators should really only be used in installations where the system is going to be playing for periods of time with the vehicle off and running the batteries all the way down. Isolators are more commonly found in marine applications and off-road (winching) applications.

AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. The liquid inside the battery is absorbed into a mat (fabric type material) that surrounds the plates in each cell.

So I was going to get a d3400 as a second battery under the hood(tryck has 2 trays) and keep the stock. Got ny mechman 270 ordered too.

So should I:

1. keep stock with the d3400 untill stock goes out or I can buy an other( dont care if stock goes, if I remove it I wont use it again anyways)

2. Take out stock and use d3400, then later buy an other when I can( if I do replace stock off the bat should I go for the starter 3400?)

Ps 3400 the biggest I can get in both hood location
