certifiednut
savage makes a very nice rifle, and their value brand stevens is good as well. both use the same interchangeable parts, and are just as easy to find custom parts for as a rem. the stevens models dont have any frills but are very good considering the low price you pay. these orphans aren't going to feast on themselves
Miguels
its a good rifle and its the only one holding a record 500 kills in 100 days by the white death. 500 kills in less than 100 days i would says thats pretty darn accurate for iron sights. yes i get you guys there is better and newer rifles but the mosin is a very good rifle. and dont forget the rifle is only as accurate as the shooter is. my logshttp://www.stevemead...-my-new-set-up/my blow through loghttp://www.stevemead...future-updates/ 96 ss http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/164094-96-impala-ss-build/

Things done changed in that time frame. He mentioned that he wants to get into precision shooting. The mosin nagant is not a precision rig. From the action to the barrel to the trigger to the round its just not there. Is it fun? yep? Is it dirt cheap? yep but its not a precision rifle. There are a lot of fun old rifles out there from that era. Hell I own an sks even but its just not on par with the precision rigs (like he asked about) Thats why they arent used anymore. Ive learned that the only people who swear up and down by something really havent had the chance to own anything better. Borris The Blade
I'd go with the rem 700 in .308 like N8 said lots of parts available so you could go your own way with it. Its like the AR of the bolt action world. It's like rubbing your wiener up against a sheep.
