marknotts
What is the difference in a system designed for SPL and a system designed for pounding. Ive heard systems hitting high numbers on the meter but not really pounding, and systems you can hear half a mile away that rattle your windows but dont get high numbers on the meter. roscoe1129
The whole thing about a true SPL machine is that they are built to keep the pressure inside the vehicle and not let it escape. They use alot of bracing, concrete, steel, modify the windows to 3 inch bullet proof acrylic, the inside of the vehicles (on the hardcore ones) are modded to "direct" as much as possible the bass waves towards the sensor. And these vehicles are One Note Wonders AKA FART MACHINES. They play one frequency real well but if you were to put music in them it would sound like total ass. Ground pounders are just daily driven street machines that have alot of subs and alot of power and beat like none other! Usually SPL vehicles are tuned higher and groundpounders are tuned lower. Thing is, it takes A LOT more power to drive lower frequencies as loud as higher frequencies, simply because a) your ears are less sensitive to them and they require more energy. However, lower frequencies travel farther....hence, the reason why you hear groundpounders from a mile away.
marknotts
So its the lows that travel and give the rolling thunderous bass that can be heard at distance but what influences the intensity of the sound at a distance? Is this down to cone area and power and Xmax? Do you need lots and lots of big, powerfull subs or can it be done from relativaley small set-ups if done correctly? What are the best boxes to use? Sealed, ported or bandpass?
sully
I usually use ported boxes because they can be tuned to produce the frequencies usually found in most music rather efficiently... Meaning that you have higher output over a wide frequency range versus a sealed box. Bandpass have an even higher output but over a limited frequency range so if you just want low lows and want it as loud as possible this is a good option for you. tejcurrent
Since ported boxes will generally give you a gain in the audible frequency range over a sealed box it makes more sense to go ported or bandpass or some variation. efficiency ftw.
