CJ18
I would go with a pistol over a revolver. You get the extra rds and pistols are easier and quicker to reload. If you can get a low cap mag, this would be my choice for a 4.5" pistol within your budget. http://www.impactguns.com/springfield-xdm-40sw-45in-bi-tone-16rd-xdm9212hcsp-706397877330.aspx

I'm still a little undecided on caliber though. What are the advantages and disadvantages between 9mm, .40, and .45?

LT.Smoke
the caliber debate can get ugly real fast. I definitely agree with that... Everyone will have their opinion on what is the best caliber and reasons. Logan Fehr It really comes down to what you are most comfortable with carrying and shooting.. All of them have plenty of power and penetration to propely protect your Ass in a sticky situation.. Assuming you can hit what you are aiming at. Borris The Blade
as far as caliber go with what you feel you comfortable with and there is no magic round that will stop a man in one shot. I went with a 9mm because its cheaper to shoot and it will do the job when needed provided rounds are on target and hollow points are used. It's like rubbing your wiener up against a sheep. LoganFehr
Well I guess I'm gonna go with 9mm. Anybody have experience with the XDM? On a side note, what types/brands of ammo do you guys use and/or suggest?
BulletInjection
Well if you are limited to only 10 rounds maybe get a .45 to throw big chunks of copper/lead. But with all the different self defense ammo out there you really can't go wrong with any caliber. It is all very effective. LoganFehr
So I shouldn't really have any issues with a 9mm. Since, by law, I can only use it at the range.
