Wicks
Did you do what i told ya to do 8 months ago????? Haha. Said screw it and dropped the impedance down to 0.25 Here's the actual impedance sweep: The "true" impedance really only drops to ~0.5ohms. Wicks
Well... here's full disclosure. My previous "Legal" score that I measured, wired at 1ohm: Then after dropping to 0.25ohms: Nowhere near the gain I expected as my power should be GREATLY increased. I'll do some clamp tests to check but the impedance measurements don't lie. I have a suspicion that my SPL Labs meter is reading a bit low. Every competition that I attend is showing about 1dB above what I measure. So my next competition should go a good 147dB which is at least where I wanted to be. After Legal, I wanted to see what I could to Outlaw. That's where this came from: With the knowledge that my meter mght be reading low, this shows that I'm solidly in the 50 club And DAMN does it get down with a 41Hz test tone. Now to the real question...............Daily. Sorry to state that this configuration does NOT work for daily. I've played a few songs and as expected, at certain frequencies, the DC5K goes into protect, with any song that I push hard. So the DC amp definitely doesn't like "real" 0.5ohm loads. The system also doesn't like a full tilt burp either, like I usually did for dBDrag. Way too much surge current into the voice coils. With this configuration I need to roll into the higher power, not burp it which makes sense as burping full tilt probably gives way too much of a surge current. Rolling into the volume gives the impedance a chance to settle and stabilize the amp into a safe range. Dissappointing......yes, but expected. Wiring to 0.5 is one thing but 0.25 is a whole different world. Also, the way the amp plays music is a bit different. I was told that the amp would sound different at 0.25 and it certainly does. The subs get a bit wild and are much more uncontrolled then they were. They also bottom out which I wasn't able to do at 1ohm. So I don't think that running 0.25 is what I want to do for daily, but it sure comes in handy for competitions. I have an idea that should allow me to switch between the two configurations easiily and I'm thinking about giving it a try. It will be a wiring challenge but in the end will be real nice. Oh yeah. Kyle, my voltage does drop quite a bit wired to 0.25 but my modified "VM-1" still doesn't drop in the red, so my electrical seems to be able to hold up. For competing it should be no sweat, daily, it might have issues after a good amout of demo'ing but the amp tends to protect fairly soon anyway. Keeping the volume down, so it doesn't protect, isn't really worth it. To the ear, the system was louder at full tilt when wired to 1ohm, then if I hold the volume down at 0.25ohms. So there it is! After this, reconing to 0.5 would probly be spot-on. BUT...if I can pull it off, upgrading the amp to a 7k would make this system SCREAM! Thanks though Dude. I have to say, while I was metering the Outlaw score, the sound was pretty damn intense. The car was shaking like crazy, my vision was blurry...it was AWESOME..... It's a ton of fun uncovering these abilities in my system that I didn't think were there. When I started, my best outlaw was 146dB. Now I'm a solid 150dB. Not bad for just playing with a few settings. "Stay Thirsty My Friends!!" Krakin
You might be able to look into capacitive, inductive, and resistive loads. I know it is probably not reasonable for you to consider a new enclosure yet, lol, but probably good to look at. Just a little example of a Powercube test on an amp. I've never seen anything on the DC amp, or any of the other similar amps out there, so I have no clue what they might look like. Especially at such a low ohm load. Krakin's Home Dipole Project http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/186153-krakins-dipole-project-new-reciever-in-rockford-science/#entry2772370 Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist? I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . . What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself but what has drawn your attention in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears, thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.
