S15_Silvia
I'm putting together a list of equipment for my next build. I have everything pretty much down pat, but am lost in the world of RCA cables. In particular I'm looking at these Rockford premium ones, as well as a several different Knu models. Furthermore, I see Wicks using high-end coax with RCA ends on it in his M3, so that has me thinking as well. My questions: How much shielding is enough? I know some have just a basic mylar/foil layer, and others take it a few steps further. Does the metal/plating of the connector matter in the least? Wicks
Thanks for the plug! Depends on a lot of factors. Where you run your cables. How much noise you have to contend with. How much you want to spend. Type of output signal your HU and amps can take. A lot of companies use "twisted pair" as marketing hype but unless you have differential outputs on your HU and inputs on your amp, it won't do anything for noise. Coax cable has an outside shield which helps eliminate radiated noise from the car. Most general coax has pretty good shield coverage at like 75-80% or something. The stuff I got was double shielded with like 99% coverage. Overkill? Maybe, but if I was going to run it then it wanted to make it as good as possible rather then have to fix some alternator whine later. As you can see most people probably run generic RCAs and have no issue. If so great, I just wanted to try something out of the box and see how it worked. My build is still in progress so I have yet to even hear those cables but we'll see. diatribe
In my experience shielded RCA's add more noise than they block. I believe that the install of the RCA's will make a far more noticeable difference in sound quality as compared to using expensive cables.
blkgp_03
I ran the ixos 1000 series rca's for a while they were alright. I switched to the 5000 series from them they were a major improvement. I heard things through them more clearer and detailed than I did the 1000 series. They were louder as well. Then I ran the stinger 6000 series. I couldn't really tell that much of difference. Then I ran the eks from KNU. I didnt think an RCA cable could be much better but I was wrong. They were a major upgrade from the 5000 series from ixos and 6000 from stinger. I know that RCA quality is an important part and does play a major role. Clip city bitch, clip clip city bitch. 10's, 12's, 15's, goin up in flames bitch. S15_Silvia
Lots of good info so far. There are just so many brands, and they of course all claim that this thing about them makes them the best... 2016 Subaru BRZ | Sony XAV-AX100 | Rockford Fosgate DSM 4080 & DSM 40ix | On 6/6/2012 at 6:32 PM, 'LZTYBRN' said: 3. beatinpearls
I also used RG-6 Coax to my sub on the last build. Now pretty much completely re-doing it all and will be using RG-6 quad shield throughout.
