revoracing247 Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 hey guys, just thinking inhead when i finally finish my box and put it in my truck. im running a jl 12" in a t-line. rated rms is 300 for the sub. im gonna be powering it with a polk audio PA 880 wired at 2 ohms so it'll be pushing 500rms. so im wondering what i should do about my gain. should i set my gain with my friends dd1 and turn the sub level down on my deck or something? or should i try to figure out how much power the amp is actually pushing and set the gain so it's pushing 300rms when the deck is just under clipping? (idk if i have access to the tools necessarily to do that but i can always try to find a way) anyways just wanted to get some of your guy's opinions. btw when i listen to my system i always pay particular attention to the sound of the sub and careful to notice if anything doesn't sound right. im not the type to just crank the volume and all of a sudden wonder what's wrong when i haven't noticed it coning out for the last 5 minutes or getting toasty. ~ If it was easy, everybody would be doing it ~

Given that it's in a t-line, it may bottom out really quickly on that kind of power, and then you can just turn the gains down until it doesnt bottom out/get smelly at full tilt. So basically just trial and error. And hey, you have another sub to drop in there something goes wrong... lol this is true, i can always push this one a tad bit cause i have the other one ready to go. i guess i just need to find out where my (hopefully new) deck clips when i come back. and people wonder why i don't like other people playing with my system or listening to it while im not there. i guess it's gonna be one of those things where i'll know my system and it jsut comes from hours of being with it. ~ If it was easy, everybody would be doing it ~

revoracing247 Posted November 15, 2012 Author Report Posted November 15, 2012 I'd leave the keys to my truck at home so you could play with it while I'm gone, but I don't like it when people play with my stuff either when I'm not there! honestly it wouldnt be as fun with out ya there and i don't trust myself either! i don't know your system! it's like racing a drag car that isn't yours. you have no idea where it's limits are and what to pay attention to. set the gain to match the preout(rca out) of the head unit. if it distorts, back it off a bit and i think that's probably the best way to go about it. ~ If it was easy, everybody would be doing it ~

If it sounds 'harsh'(clipping) or makes any other odd noises / smells - turn it down! I have yet to blow any subwoofer or speaker with this method you use -15? have you ever had issues? mine is at -5 and thought about going to -10 so the bass is a bit louder

But as I said: common sense is key If I am listening to a particularly loud song, I'll turn the sub level on my deck down to -11 or -13. Most music it is at -9, occasionally -7.
