His defense is that he thought he saw someone with a gun pointed at him in the SUV

Then why didn't he remove himself from the situation, get in his car (which he had to do to get his weapon, it wasn't on his person from what I recall) and leave?

If he genuinely felt he was defending himself, why did he leave the scene?

His actions just don't add up to what he's claiming.

Florida is stand your ground no right to retreat state. In a violent or threatening situation you do not have to leave or retreat from any public domain which concealed or otherwise permitted weapons are allowed.
