Plugs into the wall and allows you to adjust the AC voltage. Then you could wall socket it and be able to adjust the output. Just play test tones and watch the voltage and you'll be fine. that's actually a really really good idea. make a cable that will plug into the variac just in case they do have one at school. if not, try it your way. but the variac will be a great safe way to go. although I'd still use a speaker you didnt care about blowing lol. Thanks! Just popped in my head while I was thinking about this topic. I use them at work quite a bit and its a great way to adjust the AC voltage rather than just plug the speaker directly to a full 110-120Vac. Variac's also have a fused output so there is some protection. Downside is that most are probably <10A of output so you may have trouble getting full capability from the outlet (depending on the impedance of the speaker at 60Hz)... But like mentioned above you'll never get that high in a classroom anyway. AGREE on using a spare sub that you don't care about. Unless you really know what you're doing, you're bound to connect something wrong or forget to turn something down and when you hit the power............POOFFFFFFFFF.
