here is a chart to help you see how wrong you are with the (2) 18s is 36inches of cone actually 508inches and (3) 12s is 36inches of cone actually is 339inches....

you would need (7) 10s or (5) 12s to have more cone area than 2 18s...this is why people go with 15s and 18s...

15s are great for cone area and cubes used per sub....compared to other size subs

(10) SA 8s would run you about $1500 and need 4kw rms with 5-7.5cubes ported....where (2)Fi BL 18s would be like $700 and take 3kw rms and 12cubes ported

there are other examples that could make it more feasible to run more lower powered/cost subs
