When does a HO alt need to come into play?

Recommended Posts

So, in the opel, i want to do a dc 2k and a dc 175.4. I will have a 1998-ish chevy 4.3L which i think has a 90amp alt on it. Can i just do some XS batts and call it good without having to upgrade the alt? like 2 D3100 or something?

Depends, is this for a daily application or spl purposes? If it's for daily I'd suggest a HO alt + maybe 1 extra battery. You're gonna be drawing more current than your stock alt can supply so you're gonna want to be able to handle that current draw.

Key thing to remember, your stock alt is really there to keep the car running and lights on. The manufacturer never expected anyone add a 200+ amp of additional draw.

  • Subwoofer Enclosure: 9.1cubes @ 32hz - brutal.
  • Mids & Highs Amp: CT125.4

if it's a daily drive then I'm gonna say yes because all you're doing essentially is making the pool bigger. So it will simply take longer to run out of juice than if you only had only one battery..... output > input = bad

Or should i get the HO alt THEN the subs?

edit:And is output the electrical? Wouldnt that be bad to run a 90amp on 2 huge batteries with just 3k watts in audio? D:

you are essentially running close to 3krms. I personally would go with a HO alt after 2k.

putting that much strain on a stock alt will be the death of it

I say alt then subs from personal experience... loved my sub after I got it, but amp was always cutting out because I didn't have proper electrical (alt and batts)
