Soundstream SPLX 15 smell after playing hard..

I am using 2 of the Powerbass 1500.1 asa series but they are turned up between half to just under half way. my voltage never drops below 13 even on lower 20's hrtz. My amp isn't clipping and there by ear is no distortion. I set the levels by dmm. and the dust cap is not even luke warm. i know in a ported box your subs loose the ability to hadle its true watts its actually lower, but the amps are a true 1500, but only pushing half, so idk. It maybe break in but i had the similar smell with my l7's and the voice coils werent bad but you could tell the wear from the speaker wire, but that was a backwood install not like this one at all. So i do believe power is out, heat maybe it is a deep box.

this means absolutely nothing. half way on the gain doesnt signify half power from the amplifiers or that they are only working half of what they would. you are probably clipping as well as giving the subs too much power.

Whole lot of. Misinfo. If you didn't set gains with a scope or dd1 you don't know you aren't clipping.

i also had the clarion eqs 7 band eq and if you read about it, it changes the rca voltage to 7v. Thought i shoulda been at 2v like my headunit put out and ended up blowing my underpowered speakers. No doubt in my mind youre clipping your sub and probably the rest of your stuff

Smelt means either a small, bony fish, or the process of smelting, which is to melt down or fuse(chemically change).

Smelled is the past tense for having previously smelled something. Something that you did smell previously. Smelt is not the word you were looking for. This was a free lesson :)

I'm sorry if that's harsh, I'm just trying to help. I also agree with others that you are likely sending square waves to your subwoofers. Square waves, or clipped waves, are what happens when the signal peak is no longer clean or fluid. The top of the sound wave is chopped off, or clipped and is no longer audible. This can happen when you've improperly set your gain pot. The purpose of the gain pot on the amp it's to match the pre out voltage if your HU.

Im not the one you want to try to troll. Just a fyi for you.

Do not use the Subwoofer output of equalizer. Use output from headunit. If you are using equalizer for sub you are over driving gains.

The gain on those amplifiers should be almost all the way down, considering the preamp you're using.

You cannot detect dangerous clipping by ear. You cannot tell if a signal is clipped by monitoring output voltage with a multimeter. Moreover, if you're boosting any low frequencies with the eq, you're making the clipping worse and, you don' t know the volume at which your head unit clips so, you could be sending a bad signal to a preamp that's making the bad signal worse and then, you are (without question) overdriving the amplifier with the gain setting you mentioned.

New subs sometimes emit a smell for a while but there are so many other indications you're doing damage to your subs that no one can say with any degree of accuracy that what you're smelling is normal.
