Optima 1 year old, going bad??

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've been recently having potential battery problems. I bought an Optima yellow top about 1 year ago from eBay new and it has always sat around 12.6 volts resting in my car. Just a month ago it started going lower and lower. It is currently at 12.1 resting almost everytime I jump in my car, even after just a couple hours after the car has been driven. Could my Optima be dying?? I paid $174 for it and they are suppose to be solid as a rock, so I wouldn't think so.

Also, my alt has always charged it anywhere from 13.5 to 13.8 volts and has recently been higher around 14.2 volts. It is only ~32 degrees outside and is going to get much much colder. I have a RF T1500-1bdCP @ 4 ohms and a T600-4 @ 4 ohms with a RF capacitor. Stock 130 amp alt. Optima is a D34 group.

Any thoughts or info on this matter? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Sounds like you system is graving more power. May need to upgrade to bigger alternator or a D31000s in backs. Battery is not charging because system is taking all the power.

optimas WILL just up and die. had it happen to me. IIRC N8 also had it happen in his truck just as he started his wall.

pull it out and load test it, just becasue it shows 12.X volts doesnt mean its good. it could drop to 1v while loaded down

I did have one go out but it was one of the older new ones I had. It went out after the wall was in though so I had to dig it out from under the wall. It went out in style though lol

I've had one for 6 years with no problems so I don't why yall are having the issues you are with them.. I think they're good batteries, mine was only on 1500 watt setup at the time in my truck. I got a D3400 under hood now and D1200 in back. My YT has been in a closet resting at 12.6 volts for 7 months. Sounds like you need to charge it with a good charger and upgrade your alt them maybe add another battery in the back if needed after that. I charge my batteries with a C-tek 7002US and it'a an awesome little charger..
