  1. 1. Which Subwoofer for my home setup? Specs are in first post.

    • Dayton Titanic

Alright guys, I've got the wheels rolling on my new setup:

Receiver: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_158STDH540/Sony-STR-DH540.html

Sub amp: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-spa500-500w-subwoofer-plate-amplifier--300-807

Sub: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-um12-22-12-ultimax-dvc-subwoofer-2-ohms-per-coil--295-512

or

http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-ts320d-4-12-titanic-mk-4-subwoofer-4-ohm--295-403

First off, I am leaning towards the ultimax, the specs seem to indicate it will get lower. PLEASE, correct me if i am wrong, Im new to this home audio thing. Id like input on these subs, and other recommendations are welcome, as long as you can explain why.

Second, I'd like some help on the enclosure(for the ultimax, for now). I know tune low, but how much airspace and how much port? The living room is only 14'x14' with a 9' ceiling.

All help is welcome!!!

id reccommend a 4th order. to get an even amount of bass in a living room you need loading walls just like in a car. tune low is good. id say for movies and stuff like that tune around 24 or even down to 20. for music tune higher 20s. port area is a function of the driver. im not too familiar with home enclosures but im telling you what didnt work with mine. high tuning wasnt good. and to get descent bass i had to put in corner and aim at wall. thats why i reccommend a 4th. jsut stick to around the port area youd think you need for a car setup jsut tune lower.

airspace and port same as car. jsut optimal for the woofer.

Considered a 4th, but with my lack of experience, Id rather start with a regular ported design. The subs listed have pretty low Fs's for 12s, and I have a good corner in the room for a good size box if needed.

Oh i know how a 12v system works I did take 3 years of electronics in High school hands on and some in college and also worked on cars in college an always got A's to B's in each class.

But oh well enough dealing with ppl who have probably not even lived as long as ive been into electronics!

Downfire for sure if he has wood floors. If carpet downfire onto wood base of sub. Carpet eats bass in a house. Behind a sofa against the wall works great. If not ford into corner.
