Are we hurting or helping are members?

Recommended Posts

I try to help the newly minted SMD newbies. I've been there, done that. Even though you may read the rules, it's tough sometimes to figure out the flow of a new forum. Also difficult to use the search function when you don't have the vocabulary to knowledge of what to search for yet. I know some folks join here from Steve's YouTube videos. I know I did. At that point all I knew is that this bass thing is kind of cool and I wanted a slice of that pie. But when I joined... Oh man.... I didn't even know enough to know what I didn't know. I though I could hacksaw a hole in a box and call it ported.

That really wasn't all too long ago. I remember what it was like trying to wrap my head around all this stuff when I knew nothing. So I try to keep that in mind when I'm answering a new member on here who is clearly lost.

Yeah when they appreciate the help.

I'm "old" so there was no SMD forum, shit there wasn't even google or Internet first time I made sparks fly, I mean installed an amp. The resources new people have in our hobby are incredible and I hate to see them taken for granted. I love helping out someone who knows they are being helped and accept teaching. I still learn everyday, and appreciate the sources that teach me.

Just reported this post

I bet Kyle is the number one (by his own admissions) post reporter in SMD history.

Naw... He does report a lot :good: but I did a hell of a lot of reporting before Steve made me a mod :)

Not going to mention names but some people are judgmental/quick to make an assumption. Those few people don't make up the majority though.

I have both tried to help and bash but I have never bashed before offering help. If me and others are trying to explain to someone why their 1500watt sub burnt up on 750watts (talking rms just an example no thread I've seen of this exact issue) and the person won't except that his ear can't tell him the quality of his free music, hu clipping or gain setting then yeah they get bashed. Then if they go and start ranting about hoe their friends dad is an expert world finalist in spl drags or something they get bashed until they leave the forum. Simple as that.

people like that are just spreading the false info that pushy greedy local car audio shops spread or info they heard from a guy at a place who claimed x happens for x reason with no scientific proof.

this forum is about providing info with proof to expand everyone knowledge. That in itself is help. Some of the smartest members on here know what they know from personal building and testing, before asking for someone to give them the cheat sheet with all the answers. In return they make threads explaining their findings.

People here are very helpful for the most part. What gets the bashing going is

1. Not using the search engine.

2. Posting a topic thats been beaten to death (I.E. Audiopoop).

3. Posting in the wrong section.

4. Not reading the rules on VS threads.

5. Asking a question and then ignoring advice.

6. Asking a question and then geting butthurt after people give you advice.

7. Blind & blatant Nutthuggery

Most often I see:

- thread asking about cheap amplifiers for a "budget setup".

- Experienced member suggests that the amp is shit and is a waste of money. Advises them to save money for better equipment.

- OP goes into fit of rage because someone told them the truth about the shitty chinese garbage they wanted

- when evidence is provided that said equipment is garbage they ignore it and continue to cry until someone gets banned.

If members who ask for advice get bashed on, its probably because they acted like a child when they heard an oppoing opinion. There are some members who might flame just to be a dick, but those are few and far between.
