Why do higher rms subs get louder than lower rms subs with the same excursion?

Hey. just curious why higher rms subs can get louder than lower rms subs that have pretty much the same excursion? is it the motor force? If 2 subs of the same size have the same excursion aren't they going to move the same amount of air? I don't understand what makes a 3000 rms sub louder than a 2000 rms sub?

Just curious

There are many variables involved other than power rating, you should describe your methods and results supporting your conclusion.

Because at 3000 watts one will heat up more than the other cause the impedance to change and therefore not seeing as much power.

It's hard to say without knowing all the variables involved. Motor force, cooling sensitivity, box and amount of power will all play into it. Probably other stuff I didn't think about too.

At any given power under the rated power of the lower(so like under 2000 in this case) the sub that handles less power may be louder. Never know, too many varibles.

think op is asking

2 sub both 12" both 30mm xmas, except one is 2000rms rated other is 3000rms rated,

there is a lot more then that, and the 3000rms sub may not be louder then the 2000rms

the install will play the biggest part

lets.not forget that sometimes the power rating doesn't mean squat! take the z.4 as a example it has a rating of 1750w rms. I've.seen them on 5k amps and clamped at 3636w rms the sub barely flinched. I've also seen 2000w Subs bottom out when they get that much good power.

as said before there are allot of variables that take place sensitivity is one of them. every sub is not created equal.

Simple answer, power = energy - accoustical energy/heat . The bigger your coil windings are,the less prone they are to heat at the cost of sensitivity. The bigger your motor is,the more mechanical force can be driven. Other factors like coil leignt coil diameter and wire guage also effect this. Yes,most of your power is turned into heat, but heavier guage wire will take more power to heat. Therefore, more accoustical energy.

not so much...

the louder drivers most use,.. use a smaller coil.

Less moving mass...

EDIT- also, motor mass (like the full retard 12 stack motors) mean nothing on the gauss that puts said force, WHERE it matters, and applys WORKING force.

Meades NEW big drivers ILL BET are a perfect example of this.

Bigger isnt always better. Application,... will always win.

True, like i said. Coil length coil diameter and coil wire guage play a role in this. All comes down to power or sensitivity.
