corypi Posted October 12, 2014 Report Posted October 12, 2014 hi so im running 2 10s and i set my gains using audiacity and my laptops mic input as a o-scope ... all my power ground wire is 8 gauge(amps minium recomended) I hit 40v on the dmm playing a 50hz 0db tone on 4ohm subs when i clip now ive been thinking of upgradeing to 4gauge for my amp i was just wondering if it will have any effect on my rms power level? will i beable to hit more then 40v with out cliping? also when driving around i see a voltage drop to 12.74v on heavy bass sometimes and have also blown the 40amp fuse on my power wire a couple of times so thats why i was thinking of going to 4 gauge (100amp inline) thanks for your help
SLYentist Posted October 15, 2014 Report Posted October 15, 2014 welcome to the forums! 8 gauge is definitely rated higher than 40 amps. Not much higher, but you can safely put a 60-80 amp fuse in there. Also, your method of setting gains is not exactly desirable. A DMM is a slightly better tool for the job. 12.74 looks like its dropping down to battery voltage. If you do upgrade, just go as big as you can afford. Better that then spending money to upgrade over and over as your power demands grow. Cables and wires almost never fail; the terminations do.
alaskanzx5 Posted October 15, 2014 Report Posted October 15, 2014 Considering that you never mention the amp no one can actually help you. You ask a question about your amp but gave no info on the amp... t1500bdcp 2 t2d4 15" 1 t600.4 1 t400.2 1 set p1 tweets singer alt, tons of wiring, smd vm-1, 80prs, back seat delete, still in the works, aiming for a 145-147 with the ability to play 25hz up to 50hz.
RainStryke Posted October 15, 2014 Report Posted October 15, 2014 Yeah, curious about the 8 gauge wire you are using as well... who makes your wires and do you know if they are CCA or OFC?
hoit Posted October 15, 2014 Report Posted October 15, 2014 even on small setups...I cant stress enough electrical...maybe im overkill...but IMO, like Rainstryke said, a true 8 gauge should be fine for 40 amps. and the amp brand and model will most def help the experts around here (not me) to better pin point a solution. I personally, would suggest minimum 4 guage on any descent after market system. but what do I know? 2007 Chevy Aveo Ls sedan 2 Sundown Xv2 on scv4k @ .5 ohm 2 pair RE XXX 6.5 components on sax200.4 @ 2 ohm Big Three, Three runs 1/0 power from front to back, 1 ground front to back Two runs ground from rear bank to chassis XS power d3100 upfront, 3 Odyssey 2150s in bank Singer 220 amp alt
alaskanzx5 Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 A good ofc 8 guage is only good up to 60-80amps. 4 gauge up to 100-150 and 0guage 200-300. t1500bdcp 2 t2d4 15" 1 t600.4 1 t400.2 1 set p1 tweets singer alt, tons of wiring, smd vm-1, 80prs, back seat delete, still in the works, aiming for a 145-147 with the ability to play 25hz up to 50hz.
Broke_Audio_Addict Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 I don't use anything smaller than 4 Guage ever for any system no matter how small it may be. That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.
bcbrassard Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 OP welcome to the forum. Your electrical system is the arteries for your amp and if they are to small you shit dies. IMO you cant have overkill. Upgrading to 4 gauge OFc wire and doing the big 3 will Boost amps performance. Make sure you run the right fuses for all amp and have a really good battery. 3000 watt system and this is how alot of people have there setups on this forum. This will give you an idea and you can do it fairly cheaply.
