hdc3 true power handling

I have 2 hdc315's. The copper coil versions, not the aluminium. I have the 2 of them being pushed by 2 soundqubed 2200 watt amps that are strapped at 2 ohms making at least 4400 rms. The subs take them with ease. I've never smelled the subs and even when I went to be get my car to get tested with a termlab, I beat the hell out of my subs for over an hour. They still weren't even warm to the touch. How much clean power can they really take? 3k? 3.5k? They're in a 10 cu ft slot ported box tuned to 32 hz.

Unless you're giving them a very very consistent 14.4V, you're not getting 4400 out of those two amps being strapped at 1 ohm.

yea you are probably clamping 1500 rms if you are lucky. those subs like to be on at least a 2k amp a piece which means realistically you are seing maybe 750 ish to 1k per sub. thier rating of 1k is a little under. i bet you can feed them a clean 2k each and they would be fine for a while.

OP, to say it simply. 2500w to about 3000w per sub depending on how they act in your enclosure. The thermal limits will start to show at 3k+.

So 2 3500's would probably do the trick.

bump4life, talking about DC rise in a musical situation is pointless.

I am talking about an AC impedence rise. we are in a musical situation. the reactance of the coil in the speaker changes with the frequency played.. most people think they are getting 4k out of 2 2200s when in reality id be surprised if he clamps 2k. especially wired to 1 ohm, on music. he is seing a fraction of what he thinks he is seing giving him a false confidence that his subs can take 4 times thier rating.

people think x company underrates all thier subs when in reality good companies will rate thier subs at a level where the speaker could play indefinetly at. sure could it take more than rated, yes but for how long? most of us, unless at a show demoing, play our cars for 30 minutes, an hour , maybe 2 hours at most, full tilt, even at comps. sure there is exceptions to everything, but we never really push rated power to subs for long.

thats what i am talking about. DC has nothing to do with what I said.

That's all fine and dandy, but you are explaining it to someone who knows what impedance rise is, or the difference between AC and DC circuits, but the OP most likely doesn't. You have to give him something he can understand vs. some in depth explanation that will just confuse.

And my bad, you never said DC, but still.... how many people actually measure impedance rise..? lol.

i understand what you are saying , thats usually my argument ;) lol. he can ask questions to learn. I am in a helpful mood.

impedence rise? measure it, prolly not many. account for it? everyone who wires below 1 ohm. lol.

I will put in it better terms then.

OP, go and buy 2 AQ 3500s, and sell the 2200s. make sure you upgrade electrical to account for the extra current draw.

I can't see how 2 2200s strapped at 2 ohms which they make 4400 rms at, I'll even start clipping at 14.2. There's no way in hell I'm getting 153.8 DB on a termlab clamping only 1500 watts.

You'd be surprised.

I also support Bump4Life's way of explaining.

There isn't enough time in life to explain things wrong, plus why say something that isn't the truth? Do that only hurts the industry.

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.
