Would this blow a subwoofer?

Recommended Posts

I am asking for a friend, he has 2 18" custom built subwoofers, 12 spoke basket, TC9 motors and PSI recones. He has them in a 2:1 4th order blowthru in a single cab F-150. The original Vent holes on the motors were about the size of a dime, but he was advised to boar them out (see the before and after picture attached) He had them professionally reconed, and they set for 3 days and once hooked up they blew (coils unwound and fried) after 2 songs. Could him cutting his vent holes have done the damage? They are on 2 strapped BC2000.1D's @ 1 ohm. The same motors with Shocker softparts played great and he chose to recone them to PSI for better power handling.

No idea on if that was a direct result of his speaker falling apart on the coil, but unless you know what you are doing to a basket, it is best to leave it alone or find a better basket to his liking.

There are a few here that would have been better able to suggest what he had done was beneficial or not.

Probably clipped the shit out of them so they thermally failed.

So a clipped signal from less than rated power for about 3 minutes would demolish the spiders and unwind the coils?

depends on how hard he was clipping them.

I mean nothing changed on his amps, they aren't clipping for sure. Crescendo installed and set his amps for his previous subs (same motor and basket, different soft parts). That's why I wasn't sure if maybe opening these vents in the basket would have caused them to overheat instantly.
