graham0599
So I'm looking into getting an amp to power my fronts on my 7.1 surround system. I'm wondering the difference is sound wise between a "pro amp" and a "home amp". examples: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crown-XTi-2000-2-Channel-Power-Amplifier-/281742588904?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41992abbe8 or http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUDIOSOURCE-AMP310-150-WATT-CH-STEREO-AMPLIFIER-/201316531891?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2edf667eb3#payCntId My 350z build- http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/174424-2008-350z-build/page-2?hl=%2B350z+%2Bbuild#entry2605678
onebadmonte
I cant tell a difference. There will be an input sensitivity issue mixing pro audio and consumer audio equipment. Make sure you can conpensate for that if you go with pro audio amps and a regular home theater receiver. aculous
connections will most likely be the only difference. So pro audio amps usually output 8 ohms standard but can run a little lower, because they have (typically) robust power supplies. Home audio not so much. Also pro audio usually are stereo only and have XLR connections on them. Sometimes they can be noisy (read Behringer...Pyle...lower end stuff) but Crown and QSC put out good stuff so you should have no issues. I spec'd out a crown amp as a sub amp for a friend and he loves it. Although something to look out for is the fact that pro audio amps are usually loud, well the fan at least. Home Audio usually use passive heatsinks. My friend has a media closet so fan noise is not an issue.
Soccerballzs
Balanced vrs nonbalanced. Get a high quality home amp. I use both on mine. Adcom amps for speakers and Peavey amps for sub. They have balanced to unbalanced convertors. http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/garage/vehicle/2438-jeep-commander/I Pioneer P99RSAmpere 38002-Ampere 125/44-6.5 inch Hertz HSK XL Mids4-8 inch JL Audio ZR Midwoofer 2-5.25 Satori Mids2-Morel Tweeters, 2 Hertz Milles 3 inch on A pillars2-Hertz Silk tweeters DC Audio Level 5/12 Skyhigh Wire Mechman 320 XS Power D3100MO Funniest Thread of the Year 2013: http://www.stevemead...dy-being-a-pos/

I don't know much about home audio yet so I'm trying to learn. And difference between balanced and unbalanced. This will give a short explination on balanced (XLR) vs unbalanced (RCA) connectors http://soundinfo.wikidot.com/ballanced-vs-unballanced-audio Sometimes to get a pro audio amp to work off the sub out on your home theater reciever you might need one of these to bump up the output voltage of the sub out high enough for the pro amp to reach max output. http://www.parts-express.com/art-cleanboxpro-stereo-balanced-unbalanced-converter--245-868 Here is a really long and technical read on why. http://www.prosoundweb.com/article/connecting_unbalanced_outputs_to_balanced_inputs_and_vice_versa/ Warhorse vs A Pair of SMDeez build Olds Cutlass Cierra IB build 2 Fi IB3 18s
bigmizzle99
I agree with what's been. Said so far...home audio for speakers and pro audio for subs. I have a Crown CE2000 for my sub, it has a fan. Some Crown amps do not. Pro audio is more about making it loud instead of sound quality. I like Adcom, Marantz are my fav right now, but anything high end, I would try Emotiva, Outlaw Audio, etc Camaro SS Build Altima build 2.0 Altima build 1.
