portable audio box idea???

Recommended Posts

hey everyone..

So i have been wanting to make a sound box (im thinking ammo can) so i can play tunes from my phone on the go...

but, i have no idea how,.. lol.. i have never made any sort of amplifier (like i want to do) and never messed with the small power setups to power the system..

ive been looking up pieces and speakers and all but some of this stuff is going over my head..

anyway.. i know i want at least 2 speakers... im wanting to stay 5 inches or smaller for speaker size b/c i am going to build in the ammo can (lid will have to be opened to hear, plug, power unit)

ive been on parts express looking and here is what i think will work (but i really dont know, lol)..

amplifier:

maybe this power suply( i kno not portable)

http://www.parts-express.com/sure-electronics-12-vdc-3a-ac-power-adapter-with-21-x-55mm-plug--320-312

speakers:

something (as long as they can get decently loud. can still hear clearly at least 30-40 ft away for refence)

thats all i know of.. ive seen people put on some sort of audio adjustment nobs. do i need that??

also, id love to use a portable battery(rechargable). any help on this would be awsome..

i will only need the aux jack or maybe 1 set of rca's for input.. i have an aux to rca cord..

and im trying to keep this under $50 but i can go to $100 if i have too..

thanks so much in advance..

Someone did an ammo can build on this forum. Do a search for it and that should help you out some. If not then you can at least PM him for some tips

Sideshow_kustom did the ammo can build.

Looking for the thread right now I'll link it if I find it.

Found it

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

I did one in a tackle box. Word to the wise don't put speakers facing each other, I didn't really think about spacing at all...I literally threw some drivers in a plastic enclosure and well it just ended up pissing me off so I have a ghetto rigged passive radiator now :) . Also good idea about keeping the drivers small. Brace the inside and deaden it if possible.

I highly doubt that amp puts out 15w's, Lepai is a little more reputable (at least he tripath 2020+ chip) and I have used them before. They put out like 7w RMS and are rated at 20w RMS so theres that. (see the BigDwiz video on the lepai and kinter amps on youtube and on this forum I bet)

This one comes with the ps.

Also if you want to do 12v I would go with a headunit, get one for $50-70 and it does the amp duties and you can plug in a USB. You don't need anything fancy and it will put out more then 7watts RMS. Just a thought. (also this assumes you are going to be running on battery power, if not go with the lepai)

You might take a look at some of the TPA3116 amps on ebay. I've been playing with a couple and they are really awesome, especially for the price!
